Nedbank CIB backs SA's mining, structuring US$700 million Platreef project finance

Deep beneath the mineral-rich soils of South Africa's northern bushveld lies one of the world's most significant new mining developments, the Platreef PGM Mine. This landmark US$700 million phase 2 transaction underscores the role of strategic capital in unlocking transformative infrastructure and demonstrates Nedbank Corporate and Investment Banking's (CIB's) experience in complex, large-scale mining finance. This funding round will help support Ivanhoe’s expansion of a new 3.3Mtpa Phase 2 concentrator, which started construction in April 2026.

Nedbank CIB successfully acted as mandated lead arranger, bookrunner, underwriter, and lender on the Platreef Mine, a flagship development led by Ivanhoe Mines near Mokopane in Limpopo. Located in the legendary Bushveld Igneous Complex, the world's largest known reserve of platinum group metals (PGMs), Platreef represents the largest mining investment in South Africa in over a decade.

This deal sends a clear message: South Africa is a host country of choice for international capital. At a time when foreign investment is increasingly selective, Platreef demonstrates that strategic, large-scale projects in South Africa remain globally competitive.

Platreef: A milestone for South African mining

The Platreef deposit is a tier 1 polymetallic mining asset that contains PGMs, nickel, copper & gold, critical minerals that are essential to the global energy transition and modern industrial supply chains. The US$700 million phase 2 financing supports the mine's expansion, which positions Platreef among Africa's most significant large-scale mining projects.

Beyond its geological scale, Platreef's design reflects innovation; a relatively small surface footprint combined with mechanised mining allows for efficient, low-cost extraction, reinforcing long-term viability and investment competitiveness.

Nivaash Singh, Head of Mining and Critical Minerals at Nedbank CIB, said: 'The Platreef transaction highlights Nedbank's deep expertise in structuring bespoke, innovative, financing solutions for large-scale mining projects while supporting sustainable economic development in South Africa.'

For the country, the impact is profound. Outside of attracting international capital, the project supports local economic growth, job creation, infrastructure development, and community upliftment in Limpopo.

Bespoke financing for a complex project

Executing a project of this scale requires cross-team collaboration and sophisticated structuring. Nedbank CIB had multiple roles to play, as mandated lead arranger, bookrunner, underwriter, and lender, co-underwriting a US$700 million phase 2 expansion. This is echoed by Singh: 'Financing a project of this scale requires deep expertise in both the mining sector and complex capital structures. Our mandate was to deliver a bespoke solution that supports both immediate needs and long-term operational sustainability.'

The transaction incorporated the hallmarks of complex project finance: robust risk management, syndication expertise, and long-term debt structuring tailored to large-scale mining infrastructure.

International capital driving local growth

Platreef attracted global investors looking for credible, high-quality African assets. By combining international funding, strong project economics, and proven mining expertise, the project demonstrates how cross-border capital flows can fuel infrastructure development and economic growth in emerging markets.

Cathy Nader, Principal: Mining and Critical Minerals at Nedbank CIB, added: 'Platreef is a world-class mining asset that showcases South Africa's resource potential. Collaborative partnerships and innovative infrastructure finance can unlock sector growth while delivering meaningful benefits to local communities.'

For Ivanhoe Mines, the phase 2 financing reinforces its long-term commitment to Africa. 'Platreef represents a transformational mining development for South Africa and for Ivanhoe Mines. The support of strong financial partners such as Nedbank has been instrumental in bringing this project to the next phase.' — Mark Sumner, EVP Corporate Finance.

A decade-long client partnership

This financing is not a once-off deal, but the culmination of over a decade of partnership. Nedbank has supported Platreef from early development phases through to phase 2, reflecting a long-term commitment to client success and sector growth.

'Our multi-year relationship with Ivanhoe Mines has allowed us to align financing solutions with both the project's immediate milestones and its long-term strategic ambitions,' said Singh.

The deal reinforces Nedbank's position as a trusted financial partner backing strategic South African assets, capable of underwriting and executing bespoke project finance solutions at scale.

Community and sustainability impact

While Platreef's reach is global, its impact is local. The project includes community infrastructure investments, water treatment initiatives, and sustainability-focused programmes that benefit communities surrounding Mokopane. These initiatives align with ESG principles, ensuring that major mining investments generate measurable social and environmental value. Platreef demonstrates how strategic capital can create shared value for investors, communities, and the country.

What the Platreef deal means for South Africa

The US$700 million Platreef Phase 2 mining financing sends a clear signal to the market: South Africa remains a competitive destination for strategic investment in mining.

'For shareholders, institutional investors, and corporate stakeholders, Platreef represents more than capital; it represents confidence and a vote of belief in South Africa's resource potential, noted Nader.

The project illustrates Nedbank CIB's expertise in structuring complex, large-scale mining finance, the strength of long-term partnerships, and the ability to mobilise international capital for local benefit.

For Limpopo communities, the national mining sector, and South Africa's long-term economic growth, Platreef is a powerful demonstration of what strategic finance, vision, and collaboration can achieve.
