Strengthening Australian–African business ties and advocating for sustainable mining finance

The 22nd edition of the Africa Down Under (ADU) mining conference will be held from 4–6 September 2024 at the Pan Pacific Hotel in Perth, Australia.

ADU is the premier forum for fostering Australian–African business and government relations encompassing a robust combination of live presentations, face-to-face meetings, and networking. Initially launched to spotlight Australia’s interests in African mining and energy, ADU has become the largest African-focused mining event outside Africa. This evolution is evident in the growing number of high-profile participants attending the annual 3-day meeting.

Building connections between Australia and Africa

Beyond fostering Africa–Australia relations, ADU is the cornerstone of Africa Week, a week-long celebration of the robust and expanding business, social, and cultural connections between Australia and the African continent. Africa Week features a diverse array of satellite events, including sessions on research, education, infrastructure, sustainable development, capacity building, energy, movies, and the arts.

Nedbank Corporate and Investment Banking is once again sponsoring the event, given the traction and success we have gained in the region. Our business will use this week to meet mining companies, investors, African government representatives and advisers, as well as to build relationships.

The expert in mining finance

Debt is the cheapest form of capital for mining projects in any company’s capital stack. Despite competition from alternative financiers like debt or equity funds, commercial bank debt remains the most competitively priced capital. They alternative financiers claim to offer quicker, simpler, and better financing terms than those of commercial banks, they bring a larger cost structure to miners’ cost of capital, which results in a reduction in shareholder value.

Mining chief financial officers are cautioned against choosing faster financing options at any cost rather than planning and working with commercial banks that promote good governance and informed decision-making, which will result in an optimally priced capital structure. Ultimately there is a role for different types of funding, but the importance of bank debt financing cannot be over emphasised as it brings a valuable risk assessment lens which is critical to an optimal debt stack. Commercial banks have layers of compliance, environmental considerations, and other factors, making commercial bank debt appear more challenging when many aspects of its requirements can be beneficial to mining companies with a public profile.

Another key advantage of commercial banks is industry expertise. Commercial banks with specialised mining divisions, such as Nedbank, understand the industry’s nuances and can take a throughout-the-cycle view on mining projects. Our expertise allows us to assess mining projects objectively and to support our clients during times of operational difficulty.
