Find out at the 25th edition of the Africa Energy Forum (AEF), which will be held in Nairobi, Kenya, from 20 to 23 June 2023. During the event Nedbank CIB will collaborate with other energy sector experts, regulators, utilities, developers, and institutions to identify crucial opportunities that will drive the industry forward.
Focus areas will include the following:
- Breaking down barriers to the energy transition in mining
- Capital flows and risk mitigation
- Financing an African transition
- Africa’s path to becoming a global hydrogen powerhouse
Nedbank CIB experts at the AEF
‘To turn on the power of tomorrow, turn to Africa’s leading experts in sustainable energy today.’
Nedbank plays a pivotal role in shaping Africa's future by actively supporting and financing the continent's energy transition and reindustrialisation efforts. This commitment paves the way for the development of a green economy centred around reliable and sustainable power supplies.
Our sector leaders will be participating in and moderating important discussions at the forum, highlighting the substantial role banks play in funding sustainable energy projects, robust infrastructure, technological innovation and research.
Amith Singh, Nedbank’s Head of Energy Finance, will be participating in the ‘Financing structures to support mining decarbonisation’ panel on 21 June (13:30 to 15:00 EAT).
As a significant power user, the mining industry has been the leading advocate for the Just Transition movement. Currently, mining companies are actively investing in and developing renewable-energy projects and have the potential to integrate green-power generation into their plans for mine closures. The discussion will explore whether decarbonisation is simply ‘mine over matter’.
Amith will also be a panellist for the session entitled ‘Knowledge sharing from Africa’s leading solution providers.
The main objective of South Africa’s Renewable Energy Independent Power Producers Procurement Programme (REIPPPP) is to obtain electricity from private sector entities. The initiative has also been designed to align with the larger national goals of promoting job creation, social upliftment, and economic inclusivity. Panel participants will share valuable lessons learned and endeavour to forecast what lies ahead.
H2 no or H2 go? Mike Peo, Head of Infrastructure, Energy and Telecommunications, will be moderating a panel discussion entitled ‘Hydrogen: Africa's opportunity’ on 22 June (13:30 to 15:00 EAT).
Panellists will outline what the hydrogen off-taker market will need from producers, developers, technology providers and policymakers, and will propose effective ways to align regulation.
Will Africa realise its ambitions and become a leader in hydrogen production and utilisation?

In Africa more than 600 million people lack access to electricity. At the current pace of electrification millions of Africans are still expected to be without electricity in 2030 unless the pace of electrification is trebled, by connecting more than 90 million people a year. Beyond electrification, African countries should also focus on reducing gaps in access to electricity between urban and rural areas through expanding the electrical grid.
