Learn about Nedbank CIB’s expertise, including property finance funding of township retail projects leading to job creation and community transformation.

Nedbank, through its Corporate and Investment Banking (CIB) Property Finance unit, has a track record of funding township, rural, and non-metro retail, and the opportunity to demonstrate this is coming up at the annual Township Retail Investment Summit (TRIS).

Exemplar and Nedbank CIB Property Finance bring the 2024 TRIS conference at Alex Mall in Johannesburg on Wednesday, 2 October 2024, where leaders from the retail, finance, and public sectors will share their perspectives on the future of township retail investment.

Topics of discussion will include township retail trends, investment risks and rewards, as well as strategies for successful community-driven development.

Representing Nedbank is its Chief Economist, Nicky Weimar, whose experience in the banking, securities and brokering industries has given her expert knowledge of a wide range of fields within economics, including sector analysis, fixed-investment trends, and the relationship between real economic trends and developments in the financial markets.

Nedbank CIB’s track record in Property Finance and retail development

South Africa’s township economy is a dynamic component of the country's overall economic landscape, filled with opportunity and potential. Worth an estimated R750 billion per annum, the vibrant terrain of the township economy is fast becoming an increasingly attractive investment.

We want to play a meaningful and relevant role in enabling the township economy to drive economic recovery for the country by leveraging our financial expertise to help businesses grow.

Nedbank CIB’s credible track record of funding township, rural and non-metro retail lies in its deep understanding of theretail economy, making it a reliable retail development finance partner in this rapidly growing economy.

Social impact: Nedbank CIB Property Finance’s role in township communities

Fundamental to its success is the township economy’s unique expression of social value over financial value. Township economic development is a vital part of the South African economy and is where value is created and exchanged in monetary and non-monetary terms.

The impact created by projects funded by Nedbank CIB Property Finance has a knock-on effect within the community. It’s not just about the initial development, but also about the snowball effect within a community. A good example of the resulting impact of our township development projects is job creation from the retail centres developing a node in these areas, giving the community access to services and amenities that they wouldn’t have had access to previously. This transforms communities.

‘Retail development in townships plays a critical role in addressing socioeconomic challenges and creating job opportunities and convenient access to amenities and services. We believe that TRIS 2024 will not only create increased awareness of these opportunities but also pave the way for future growth in this sector,’ says Vanessa Murray, Divisional Executive for Property Finance at Nedbank CIB.

TRIS 2024: Changing perspectives. Changing lives

Exemplar and Nedbank CIB Property Finance have come together with a shared vision of driving inclusive economic growth through targeted investment in township retail infrastructure.

‘We are excited to partner with Nedbank CIB Property Finance to present a comprehensive picture of the opportunities that township retail offers,’ said Jason McCormick, CEO at Exemplar. ‘This summit is about more than just property development; it’s about creating lasting, positive change in communities through responsible investment.’

TRIS 2024 aims to provide a platform where investors, developers, retailers, government, and community leaders can collaborate to unlock the potential of under-serviced areas. The third TRIS is set to explore how strategic investments can reshape township economies by fostering entrepreneurship, addressing inequalities, and stimulating sustainable economic growth.

Facilitated by keynote speaker and entrepreneur Miles Kubheka, TRIS speakers include KANTAR, The Shoprite Group of Companies, Nedbank CIB and more.
