Nedbank is committed to helping achieve the objectives of the Paris Agreement by 2050. As the spotlight shifts towards green hydrogen as a renewable and clean energy source and a potential solution, Nedbank CIB is leading the way by supporting clean hydrogen initiatives.
Key highlights of the 2024 conference
Our Markets Research Team is hosting the 5th Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Conference in Cape Town on 6 November 2024. This conference has become an annual event, which hosts speakers like the esteemed Dr David Hart, Global Hydrogen Lead at Environment Resources Management (ERM), which is a leading provider of environment, health, safety, risk, social and sustainability consultancy services.
ERM delivers innovative solutions for their clients through a combination of in-depth technical knowledge of environmental issues and strategic business advice.
This year, Dr Hart will be speaking about fuel cells and hydrogen in a fast-changing world. He will be joined by industry leaders in hydrogen fuel cell technology and sustainable hydrogen solutions.
Matt Watson, Founder of Precious Metals Commodity Management LLC, will provide insight on alternative energy and the future of PGMs, while Dr Jonathan Butler, Head of Business Development at the Mitsubishi Corporation, will delve into value opportunities in the hydrogen and fuel cell markets and their impact on PGM demand.
Arnold van Graan
Head: Markets Reserach, Nedbank CIB
Arnold has 18 years of mining-related financial experience at various international investment banks. He joined Nedbank in 2016 as an equity analyst, covering platinum and gold producers. Before joining Nedbank, Arnold worked in equity research at the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce, the Royal Bank of Canada, and Investec Securities. He started his career in the Mining Team at Ernst & Young in Johannesburg, with secondments to practices in Manchester and New York.

Dr David Hart
Global Hydrogen Lead | ERM
Dr Hart is a partner at Environment Resources Management (ERM), which is the largest global pure-play sustainability consultancy. He is recognised as one of the leading experts in hydrogen energy technology and infrastructure, as well as in fuel cells that are used across a range of mobile and stationary applications. He consults on these subjects worldwide and is also a visiting professor at the Imperial College Centre for Environmental Policy in London.
Dr Jonathan Butler
Head of Business Development | Mitsubishi Corporation
Dr Jonathan Butler is the Precious Metals Strategist at Mitsubishi Corporation, where he works closely with its global client base and trading team. He is responsible for Mitsubishi's global research on precious metals markets. He is also involved with internal strategic planning. He is a recognised expert on the supply and demand of PGMs.
Matt Watson
Precious Metals Commodity Management LLC
Matt founded Precious Metals Commodity Management LLC, which supports clients with precious metals research, risk management and trading strategies. He is a seasoned operations executive with extensive experience in the Hard Disk Drive (HDD) industry. This includes roles at Seagate Technology, where he managed its platinum and ruthenium assets. He also led Tanaka’s North American PGM marketing efforts.
